Escaping Big Tech's Orbit

The Upload V5

Welcome to the Filecoin Foundation newsletter, where we cover big ideas and news about the Filecoin ecosystem and the decentralized web.
Today’s edition recaps FIL Lisbon.

The Big File: FIL Lisbon Recap

We’ve officially wrapped up FIL Lisbon, the largest gathering of the Filecoin community in Europe to date. Thank you to everyone who joined us last week, either in person or virtually!

In case you missed it (or want to relive it), here’s what went down during our time
in Lisbon.

Hacker Base

Filecoin Foundation teamed up with Fission and Lightshift to host a Hacker Base for the Web3 community in Lisbon – a place to network, co-work, and host great talks and workshops.

Interplanetary Party

We kicked off FIL Lisbon with an out-of-this-world Interplanetary Party alongside the Ethereum community. We celebrated the two-year anniversary of the Filecoin mainnet launch. Miss the tunes from the Interplanetary Party? Check out the official FIL Lisbon playlist.

FIL Lisbon Main Stage

The FIL Lisbon Main Stage, hosted by Filecoin Foundation, convened builders, storage providers, and storage clients alike for two packed days of programming and announcements.

We hosted 60+ speakers, including Juan Benet, Founder and CEO, Protocol Labs; Illia Polosukhin, Co-Founder, NEAR; Vera Wu, COO, Numbers Protocol; Jeff Bandman, COO, 6549 Group; Joerg Roskowetz, Head of Blockchain Technology, AMD; Kristin Smith, Executive Director, Blockchain Association; Kurt Opsahl, Deputy Executive Director and General Counsel, Electronic Frontier Foundation; Nicole Wong, Former Deputy US Chief Technology Officer; and Anna Tumadóttir, COO, Creative Commons.

The talks covered a wide range of topics, from the metaverse and NFTs to regulation and policy. There were also a number of Filecoin network-specific talks touching on Filecoin Plus, the Filecoin Virtual Machine, and the network roadmap.

Did You Catch These Announcements?

  • Decentralized Storage Alliance - Filecoin Foundation, Protocol Labs, AMD, EY, and Seagate Technology announced the Decentralized Storage Alliance, bringing together Web2 and Web3 leaders to advance and develop innovative enterprise use cases for decentralized data storage.

  • Seal Storage Technology Partners with the ATLAS Experiment at CERN on a pilot project to explore decentralized cloud storage as an efficient and cost-effective option for archival data storage. In this R&D project, Seal Storage Technology has provided 10 pebibytes (PiBs) of cloud-based storage capacity to the ATLAS Experiment, hosted in Seal’s data centers. Seal Storage Technology uses the Filecoin network and stores data across the U.S. and Canada.

  • New Survey: American Consumers Are Ready to Change Up to Web3 - A new survey of American consumers from Filecoin Foundation reveals that while Americans trust the internet’s overall resilience, they don’t like how their data is managed by the current gatekeepers. In the survey results, they speak of precious memories lost online, worry about losing control of their personal information, and recognize that they see the benefits of a decentralized internet.

  • Filecoin Saturn – Protocol Labs announced the launch of Filecoin Saturn, a data delivery network that will help scale the Filecoin network and make it more accessible to the general public.

Filecoin Station at Web Summit

We ended our time in Lisbon at the Filecoin Station at Web Summit, connecting with tech leaders from around the globe, hosting daily talks, and illustrating how simple decentralized storage can be with a photo booth that publishes attendees’ snapshots on the network.

Filecoin Foundation President and Chair Marta Belcher joined Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia, on stage at Web Summit to discuss preserving humanity’s most important information using community tools like Wikipedia and decentralized technologies like the Filecoin network.
