Bringing Filecoin’s Resilience to IPFS Workflows

The Upload V60

The Filecoin network was built to create a decentralized, efficient, and reliable way to store humanity’s data. As the incentive layer for the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), it enables long-term data storage across a global network.

Until now, developers didn’t have an easy way to automatically store pinned IPFS content on the Filecoin network. Filecoin Pin changes that. Launched in alpha last month, it lets developers back up their IPFS pins automatically––no new tools or extra steps needed. This bridges the gap between IPFS and Filecoin, moving the ecosystem closer to an open, resilient foundation for the next generation of the web.

IPFS Pinning with Filecoin-Backed Resilience

On October 20, another major Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage disrupted popular apps and developer tools worldwide, reminding us how much of today’s internet still relies on centralized systems. This highlights why decentralized infrastructure, with no single points of failure, is important to the future of the web.

With Filecoin Pin, IPFS files gain persistence and reliability from Filecoin’s decentralized network — ensuring data remains accessible, verifiable, and independent of any one provider.

  • Verifiable persistence - Storage providers must cryptographically prove daily that they continue to store and serve your data

  • Economic incentives - You only pay when storage proofs are successfully delivered and verified onchain

  • Decentralized infrastructure - Your data can be stored across a global network of independent storage providers

  • User-controlled data - Choose your providers and audit storage proofs and payments onchain

  • Seamless IPFS integration - Continue using standard IPFS mainnet tooling while gaining Filecoin's persistence guarantees

A Starting Point for Onchain Innovation

Filecoin Pin isn’t just a static product; it’s a proof of concept for what’s possible when you build on a foundation of onchain services. It’s designed to be cloned, forked, and extended––an open invitation for developers to experiment and expand.

Ways to use Filecoin Pin today:

  1. Filecoin Pin CLI - Upload new or existing IPFS files directly to Filecoin via the command line. Perfect for developers who want to integrate Filecoin storage into scripts, workflows, or local development environments.

  2. Filecoin Pin GitHub Actions - Use GitHub Actions to automatically publish websites or build artifacts to IPFS and Filecoin as part of your CI/CD pipeline. Ideal for static websites, documentation sites, and automated deployment workflows.

  3. Filecoin Pin dApp Demo - Run or fork a simple demo dApp that demonstrates Filecoin Pin in a browser-based application. Great for understanding how to integrate Filecoin Pin into web applications.

Open the Cloud

Filecoin Pin is just the beginning. This is the first glimpse of a new wave of onchain services built on Filecoin, paving the way for a more open, resilient, and decentralized cloud. Join the Filecoin Onchain Cloud mailing list at Filecoin.cloud to be first in line to build when it’s live.
